Do you want to improve the appearance of your face?
Botulinum toxin, also know as “botox”, is one of the most performed treatments in aesthetic medicine because of their excellent results and efficacy. With fillers, it is the most popular in the whole world. It is more than 25 years that this medication was authorized for aesthetic treatments and facial rejuvenation.
Botox (botulinum toxin) is the ideal treatment to eliminate facial wrinkles that appear when gesturing repeatedly, those related to facial expression. These are mainly wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, periocular (crow’s feet) and perioral (vertical lips), as well as neck bands. These are the most known indication for the use of botox.
Likewise, botox has other medical applications such as treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in the armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The application of the toxin stops the production of sweating a few days after the infiltration. Its effect lasts for approximately six months
Moreover, Botox is a treatment for migraine. The injection of the toxin around the sensitive nerves of the face and head where they pierce out the muscles, reduces the number of crisis and intensiveness of the migraine.
It as well used to treat the bruxism, that is the excessive clenching that occurs at night and it is due to the hyperactivity of the masticatory muscles.
The botulinum toxin works by inhibiting the transmission of action potentials at the level of the neuromuscular junction of the motor unit, blocking the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is the mediator, the molecule which “talks” to the muscle for contraction. Toxin injection provokes a muscular blocking, a local paralysis. That is why the facial muscles treated with botulinum toxin do not respond to our commands. In this way, we can block the appearance of wrinkles in a very specific way, only those areas that we do not want to frown.
This treatment is indicated for expression wrinkles that appear mainly between the eyebrows, forehead and crow’s feet. The treatment with botulinum toxin of the upper third of the face provides a more relaxed appearance of the expression, the improvement of the skin and the disappearance of expression wrinkles. That is, the appearance of a rejuvenated and relaxed face.
When we talk about expression wrinkles we are referring to those wrinkles on the face that appear when making a gesture and disappear when the expression is relaxed. These are the wrinkles that disappear when applying the Botox treatment.
By injecting the toxin into the wrinkle, the muscles in the area relax and the wrinkle disappears or attenuates. This returns the natural smoothness and joviality to the face.
In case the wrinkles do not completely disappear, we must combine the treatment of botulinum toxin with some other aesthetic procedure such as: facial fillers, skinboosters, lasers or dermaroller. It has also been used occasionally for upper lip wrinkles or neck bands.
Botox treatment is carried out by infiltrating small amounts of botulinum toxin into the muscles and regions mentioned. Infiltration is done with virtually painless microinjections.
The treatment is carried out in a single session, on an outpatient basis, in our own clinic and does not require local anesthesia, although topical anesthesia can be applied.
The patient can immediately return to normal activities after the session. The effect of botox injection begins to appear in three or four days, and is complete in the following seven to ten days, at which point you will notice the results.
The effects of botox are not permanent and tend to lessen after three or four months, disappearing between five or six months. Thereafter, the treatment should be repeated, after medical evaluation.
In cases where these wrinkles are deeper, the treatment is complemented with dermal filllers, which provides the lost volume of the skin and reduces the depth of the wrinkles.
Botox is a simple, non-surgical treatment increasingly in demand by people who want to eliminate the signs of aging.
This treatment must be administered by an aesthetic medical professional, it is not possible to inject Botox yourself. This treatment requires a previous diagnosis where the areas in which it will be applied and where the results will be monitored for its duration are evaluated.

Botox is a temporary treatment for wrinkles and generally lasts 3 to 6 months. After that period, a booster treatment will be needed to maintain the results.
In the long term, Botox has not been shown to cause any negative effects on the skin. In fact, some studies suggest that long-term use of Botox may have benefits in preventing wrinkles and improving skin quality.
